SUMMARY:Balancing Activism and Academia — Live stream session hosted by the ACM
DESCRIPTION:Professor David Stovall will give a talk about the ways in which he balances his interests in movements and activism with his research and teaching. \nThe question and answer period following this talk will be facilitated by Dorothy I. Burge\, Director of the Chicago Program: Arts\, Entrepreneurship & Social Justice. We will take questions from those who are able to join us via live-streaming through the webinar platform and from students enrolled in the Chicago Program in attendance.  \nRegister for Webinar \n \nDr. David Stovall \n \nDavid Stovall\, Ph.D. is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). \nProfessor Stovall’s scholarship investigates four areas: 1) Critical Race Theory\, 2) concepts of social justice in education\, 3) the relationship between housing and education\, and 4) the relationship between schools and community stakeholders. \nIn the attempt to bring theory to action\, Professor Stovall has spent the last ten years working with community organizations and schools to develop curriculum that address issues of social justice. His current work led him to become a member of the design team for the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School of Social Justice\, which opened in the fall of 2005. \nFurthering his work with communities\, students\, and teachers\, Professor Stovall is involved with youth-centered community organizations in Chicago\, New York and the Bay Area. Currently this work manifests itself in his involvement with the People’s Education Movement Chicago\, a collection of classroom teachers\, community members\, students and university professors who engage in collaborative community projects centered in creating relevant classroom based pedagogical strategies and curriculum. \n\nThis webinar is sponsored by the Graduate School Exploration Fellowship (GSEF) program.

SUMMARY:ACM/GLCA International Advisors Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The fourth meeting of this group will allow time for participants to network\, discuss common concerns and share best practices. \nFrom the Organizing Committee: \n“This meeting is distinctly different from NAFSA because of the size of our group\, the informality of our time together\, and because we are all advisors at small\, selective\, residential\, liberal arts colleges working with SEVIS RTI and a relatively small international student population. With respect to budgeting for your office\, we anticipate that each person/institution would be responsible for their own travel\, accommodations\, and some meals. \nPast topics included: I-20 Issuance & Verification of Funding; Teaching about Culture; F-1 Status & Academic Advising; Culture & Academic Honesty; Programing with Small Staff/Budgets; Preparing for Crisis; Engaging Legal Counsel; RTI Reporting\, CPT\, OPT/STEM OPT\, employment options\, taxes\, etc. We hope you will attend but also encourage you to consider presenting on a topic or with other colleagues within ACM and GLCA schools.”  \nFor more information\, including hotel and registration details\, please contact one of the members of the 2017 Organizing Committee:Rebecca Eckart\, Knox College (host campus)\, ACMJosh Ferchau\, Knox College (host campus)\, ACMMarilyn Andrew\, Denison College\, GLCAKaren Edwards\, Grinnell College\, ACMLuyen Phan\, Macalester College\, ACM
