SUMMARY:Balancing Activism and Academia — Live stream session hosted by the ACM
DESCRIPTION:Professor David Stovall will give a talk about the ways in which he balances his interests in movements and activism with his research and teaching. \nThe question and answer period following this talk will be facilitated by Dorothy I. Burge\, Director of the Chicago Program: Arts\, Entrepreneurship & Social Justice. We will take questions from those who are able to join us via live-streaming through the webinar platform and from students enrolled in the Chicago Program in attendance.  \nRegister for Webinar \n \nDr. David Stovall \n \nDavid Stovall\, Ph.D. is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). \nProfessor Stovall’s scholarship investigates four areas: 1) Critical Race Theory\, 2) concepts of social justice in education\, 3) the relationship between housing and education\, and 4) the relationship between schools and community stakeholders. \nIn the attempt to bring theory to action\, Professor Stovall has spent the last ten years working with community organizations and schools to develop curriculum that address issues of social justice. His current work led him to become a member of the design team for the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School of Social Justice\, which opened in the fall of 2005. \nFurthering his work with communities\, students\, and teachers\, Professor Stovall is involved with youth-centered community organizations in Chicago\, New York and the Bay Area. Currently this work manifests itself in his involvement with the People’s Education Movement Chicago\, a collection of classroom teachers\, community members\, students and university professors who engage in collaborative community projects centered in creating relevant classroom based pedagogical strategies and curriculum. \n\nThis webinar is sponsored by the Graduate School Exploration Fellowship (GSEF) program.
