Journalism Professor Is Selected to Lead ACM India Programs March 15, 2016

Professor Ujjwala Barve, who has taught broadcast journalism at Savitribai Phule Pune University for 20 years, has been named director of the ACM India programs.

In addition to teaching, Barve recently served for five years as head of the university’s Department of Communications and Journalism. She has also worked with the ACM program as a research guide for students whose independent study projects have focused on media-related topics.

“We are very pleased that Professor Barve will be joining the ACM staff,” said ACM Vice President and Director of Off-Campus Study Joan Gillespie in announcing the appointment. “With her distinguished career in the academic community in Pune, I know she will bring a lot of expertise and energy to her new role in maintaining the academic and experiential quality of the ACM programs in India.”

“Throughout her life, Professor Barve has shown her commitment to international and intercultural experiences,” Gillespie noted, “including studying in Russia and participating in a Rotary International program in New South Wales, Australia.”

For the past decade, Barve also has volunteered with the Pune chapter of American Field Service (AFS), where she’s been active in orienting students in the program, hosting students from the U.S., and conducting home visits to select host families.

Since 1969, ACM has operated a study away program in Pune, which is now called India: Culture, Traditions, & Globalization and offered in the fall semester. The new India: Development Studies & Hindi Language program is in its inaugural term, providing both spring semester and winter quarter/trimester options for students.

Barve will succeed Sucheta Paranjpe, who has served as a long-time Marathi teacher for the ACM and program director for the past eight years.

Prior to beginning her new post on July 1, Barve will attend the annual meeting of India program faculty advisors from the ACM colleges in April and participate in the ACM Program Directors and Visiting Faculty conference in Chicago on June 8-10.
