In summer 2013, ACM will offer a pilot online course titled Calculus: A Modeling Approach, which will be open to students enrolled at ACM colleges. The course is designed primarily for students in the natural sciences and social sciences – such as economics, environmental science, psychology, medicine, ecology, and chemistry – who wish to apply quantitative modeling tools in their discipline. Two mathematics professors, Kristina Garrett from St. Olaf College and Chad Topaz from Macalester College, are developing the eight-week course and will serve as co-instructors.
The course offers ACM students the flexibility of taking a course during the summer, regardless of where they are living, and the opportunity to enroll in a class that either might not be offered on their own campus or that doesn’t fit into their schedule during the regular academic year. Course activities will include pre-recorded lectures, online student forums, weekly videoconference tutorials with the instructors, homework assignments, and quizzes and exams. The application deadline for the course is April 15. Apply now!
