Active participation describes ACM’s two new summer programs in Mexico and India. Students will be immersed in the culture of the host country through language study, homestays, and service learning projects with community-based organizations.
On the campus of Universidad La Salle in Mexico City
Service learning – a structured work experience or internship – enables students to directly engage in Mexican or Indian society by working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in public health, education and literacy, and social services.
Interested students need to act fast! The application deadline is March 15 for the summer 2009 programs.
Complete details are on Mexico Summer Program and India Summer Program home pages.
Mexico Summer Program
Mexico City, the cosmopolitan capital and the nation’s cultural, economic, and political center, is the site of ACM’s Mexico Summer Program. Students will spend their mornings taking intensive Spanish language classes, equivalent to a semester-length course, and learning about Mexican history and culture. They will experience everyday life by living with local families.
The host institution for the program, Universidad La Salle, is one of the most prestigious private universities in Mexico and is centrally located in the pleasant La Condesa neighborhood. For the service learning placements, the program has connections with NGOs that work in a wide variety of areas, such as literacy, women’s health, social services, and human rights.
India Summer Program
In Pune, India, site of the ACM Summer Program in India
On the India Summer Program, students will experience both urban and rural life. The program is based in the city of Pune, where students will take part in an intensive introduction to Indian culture and society. They will also spend at least a week working on projects in a rural village and learning about issues such as public health and economic development.
ACM’s partner for the service learning component in India is Maitri, a well-established NGO which maintains a wide range of projects, both urban and rural, throughout the country. Service learning placements may be in either Pune or a village, and students working in Pune will live with families.
