Q. What sparked your interest in writing, and how did you get started writing fiction?
I have been making up stories for as long as I can remember, and that’s probably because my parents steeped me in fiction from a very early age. I grew up listening to them read The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, and The Chronicles of Narnia every night. After a childhood like that the idea of not creating my own characters and worlds was too weird for me to comprehend. Fourth grade English class, however, was when I decided that one day I would be an author, and I haven’t changed my mind for 10 years.
Q. How have you developed your writing while you’ve been at Coe?
So far I have really enjoyed the Coe College creative writing program, which, in my opinion, has greatly improved my writing ability in only a couple years. Currently I’m am taking my third and final fiction workshop class, and have also taken an introductory playwriting class. Outside of the classroom I continue to write fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry whenever I can find the time.
