“I enjoy being out and about—always ready for an adventure. Some of my favorite books have been written by black authors and I also like kayaking!”

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

I enjoy being out and about—always ready for an adventure. Some of my favorite books have been written by black authors and I also like kayaking!

What kind of research are you working on this summer? Who are you working with?

This past summer I had the honor to work with Dr. Rosalba Hernandez at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s School of Social Work. Our research explore the associations between positive emotion and self-care behavior in hemodialysis patients with co-morbid depression.

What part(s) of this experience will benefit you most? How so?

This summer experience has and will continue to benefit me in many ways. First of all, it gave me the opportunity to do research! It also gave the chance to feel what it’s like to be a graduate student for a short period of time. The Graduate College at Illinois took the time to show students what good presentations, applications, CV’s, and academic visibility look like. I feel more at ease going into senior year, knowing more about what graduate school might look like. The best part was being able to see that I’m not the only person of color going through this process; it was refreshing.
