“I think my exposure to a broader academic community outside my home institution of Carleton College will benefit me most academically.”

How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

I am a rising senior history major at Carleton College. I played classical guitar in high school but have since been playing upright and electric bass. I like to paint, read, and watch movies.

What kind of research are you working on this summer? Who are you working with?

I am working on history research about tailors in the United States during the 1940s. I am working with Professor Geraldo Cadava at Northwestern University.

What part(s) of this experience will benefit you most? How so?

I think my exposure to a broader academic community outside my home institution of Carleton College will benefit me most academically. This summer I have been able to meet not only professors and grad students that share academic interests but also other students who have similar aspirations. Another aspect of this summer that will help me a lot in the future is the opportunity to live in a major city like Chicago. When I am not here, I am in Phoenix or a small town in Minnesota. Navigating between life in the city and doing research was a skill that I was able to confront and learn this summer.
