Chicago Program Arts Exhibition Will Showcase Creativity of Ten Young Artists

Chicago Program Arts Exhibition Will Showcase Creativity of Ten Young Artists December 7, 2011

There will be art on many levels – literally as well as conceptually – when ten young artists from the ACM Chicago Program fill up three floors of a converted warehouse with their creative endeavors.

The Chicago Program Arts Exhibition on Sunday afternoon, December 11, will feature an eclectic line-up, from sketch comedy to poetry, animation to painting, and films to puppetry. The audience will have a chance to be more than just observers – they can also don a superhero’s cape and try their hand at an interactive artwork.

The students will present work they have created during the fall semester for their independent study projects on the Chicago Program: Arts, Entrepreneurship, & Urban Studies. Jason Pallas, a Chicago artist who teaches and mentors the students in their projects as Adjunct Faculty with the program, said that the students decided as a group to “really push [themselves] to make work that would be impactful going forward as artists and professionally after school.”

The independent project is one of the four curricular components that students on the Chicago Program complete during their semester in the city. They also take the interdisciplinary Core Course, a seminar in their area of interest, and complete an internship with a business or organization.

The Exhibition will be held at High Concept Laboratories, a creative incubator and nonprofit arts service organization that collaborates with artists to support their work, from experimentation and development through presentation and performance.

“We checked out a few venues, and that was one that lit their imaginations,” Pallas noted. “The space is amazing and they really felt like they could spread out and each have their own area to showcase what they’ve got.”

The semester in Chicago has been an opportunity for the students to stretch out their talents in new directions, according to Pallas, and they have been developing their projects in group workshops as well as individually.

“They really have taken on some ambitious things and are playing with new media,” Pallas said. “I keep telling them that I’m the lucky one, because this has really been the best educational experience of my life.”
