ACM: What sparked your interest in writing, and how did you get started writing fiction?
Taratsas: I love to read, and really good books make me want to write. When I started college, my reading habit grew to consume much of my life: I often read for school, for work, and just for fun. So I found myself with a wonderful dilemma, inspired to write while still wanting to read more. Finally, I took a creative writing class and sought opportunities that encouraged me to stop reading (if only for a little while) and start writing.
ACM: How have you developed your writing while you’ve been at Carleton?
Taratsas: Much of my experience with writing—be it fiction, creative nonfiction, or plain old academic writing—has come from Carleton. In the past three years, I have had many valuable opportunities through classes, work study, and extracurriculars to practice my writing skills and receive constructive feedback. The English department in particular has made me a better reader and a better writer, and I have tried to take advantage of all that it offers. I am very grateful for my education, the professors and peers who have helped me grow.
